Tom Cartmill : ING Discerning Eye

Online only due to Coronavirus

The ING Discerning Eye is an educational charity, established in the UK in 1990, to encourage a wider understanding and appreciation of the visual arts and to stimulate debate about the place and purpose of art in our society, and the contribution each one of us can make to its development. The exhibition comprises both publicly submitted works and works independently selected by six prominent figures from different areas of the art world: two artists, two collectors and two critics. This year the selectors are Dale Lewis, David Remfry RA, Beverley Knight, Mervyn Metcalf, Jo Baring and Tabish Kahn. Each section is hung separately to give each its own distinctive identity. The impression emerges of six small exhibitions within the whole. It provides an unusual opportunity for works by lesser-known artists to be hung alongside contributions from internationally recognised names. The selectors are solely responsible for their own selection; selection is not by committee. The only restrictions are limitation of size (only small works are permitted) and to select at least 25% of their section from the open submission.

Heather McAteer : Responsive Space

Modern Art Oxford

Heather McAteer's image/sound work 'Homo Bulla' was selected for 'Responsive Space' at Modern Art Oxford. The piece was originally created for 'Breathworks' a participatory digital project exploring everyone's unique experiences of breathing. The text accompanying the work reads: "When my identical twin sons emerged into the world prematurely at 32 weeks, they were immediately placed in incubators and their breathing aided by ventilators. These two small plastic pots containing their umbilical cord clamps and identity bracelets are reminders of their first days of life. Now sixteen years old, the sound is their combined breath."

Modern Art Oxford, 30 Pembroke Street, Oxford, OX1 1BP
